Troubleshooting for Zenarmor Device Identification

Most frequently seen Zenarmor Device Identification issues and their solutions are given below.

Only one device, which has a name that keeps changing, is shown in the devices menu.

The Devices menu displays a single device with a frequently changing name (hostname). It appears as if multiple devices are merged into one, making it difficult to track individual clients behind that device.

Root Cause

(Default Behavior - Router Device Disabled)

By default, when traffic passes through a Layer 3 (L3) device, Zenarmor captures all traffic associated with that device's MAC address, regardless of the different IP addresses using it. Zenarmor consolidates this information under a single device entry, updating the hostname and other details continuously based on the most recent observed data. This behavior is expected when a router, access point, or NAT-enabled device is present in the network and Router Device detection is not enabled. As a result, all traffic from devices connected behind the router is considered part of a single device, causing the device name to change dynamically.

Solution

Enable the Router Device option for the corresponding device. This instructs Zenarmor to treat the device as a router and to identify all connected clients individually based on their unique IP addresses.

You may enable Router Device by following the next steps.

  1. Go to Devices menu on Zenarmor UI.
  2. Find the device which has a name that keeps changing.
  3. Click on the device.
  4. Toggle the Router Device option to enable it on the right side pane.
  5. Save your changes.

Once enabled, Zenarmor will start recognizing and listing each connected client behind the router as a separate device, maintaining their individual hostnames and traffic data.
